Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget: Southern Poly

As a new blog feature to our site, I wanted to incorporate something new, something different, something our fans would not necessarily know related to our men’s basketball program and the upcoming season.

What I came up with is the Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget. For each game, I will try to post something that most fans would not know. Some will be more complex than others, but hopefully it will be something that if you are standing around the water cooler the next day would impress your friends.

So in honor of the regular season opener against Southern Poly:

Head coach Ron Hunter is 0-2 in season openers, but 2-0 in home openers in his first two years at the helm of the program. His last two season openers have been no easy task. His first game as GSU’s head coach came at Washington, a 91-74 loss. Last season, the Panthers opened the season at No. 8 Duke, falling to the Blue Devils 74-55 live on ESPNU.

However, in home openers, Hunter led the Panthers to a 69-50 win over McNeese State during the 2011-12 season. That will propelled the Panthers to a school-record 11-game win streak. Last season, Georgia State earned a 62-49 win over Monmouth in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in the Sports Arena.

Check back Tuesday as the Panthers prepare to face Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
