Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget: East Carolina

In honor of the final non-conference game of the regular season, here is another edition of our Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget. For those just following us, each game during the regular season (and hopefully postseason), I will try to post something that most fans would not know. Some will be more complex than others, but hopefully it will be something that if you are standing around the water cooler the next day would impress your friends.

Georgia State will play East Carolina on Sunday, the fifth Conference USA opponent that the Panthers will play this year. That’s not the nugget, but is an interesting fact.

For this nugget, we look back on R.J. Hunter’s record-setting performance from last Sunday (because it was rather impressive).

How did sophomore R.J. Hunter top his epic performance against ODU during his freshman season, simple, he just kept shooting.

Hunter scored a career-high 41 points on 14-of-21 shooting, knocking down 12-of-19 3-pointers at UTSA. The 12 3-pointers broke his own school record of 10 set just last year. The 19 3-point attempts also set a single-game school-record.

The 41 points scored are tied for fourth most all-time in program history and tied for the third most scored in the country this year. The 12 3s are the most in the NCAA this season.

For his efforts, Sporting News named him Player of the Day and College Sports Madness named him Sun Belt Player of the Week on Dec. 23.

Combined with Manny Atkins’ 20 points, the duos 61-point outburst was the fifth best mark in program history.

As a team, the Panthers hit 19 3-pointers, the second most in school history, just two shy of the record of 21.

Be sure to come back Thursday for another Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget as the Panthers open conference play with Troy in the Sports Arena at 7 p.m.
