Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget: Western Kentucky

Although it is early in the season, Thursday night’s game between Georgia State and Western Kentucky features two of the four teams tied for first place in the Sun Belt Conference. Many predicted either Georgia State or Western Kentucky to win the league this year, so maybe this is the first of three match-ups this year.

So here is another edition of our Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget. For those just following us (and thank you for joining us), each game during the regular season (and hopefully postseason), I will try to post something that most fans would not know. Some will be more complex than others, but hopefully it will be something that if you are standing around the water cooler the next day would impress your friends.

I could talk about win streaks or the match-ups with Western Kentucky (this is just the second), but we had to dig deeper for this one…and thank you for Asst. AD Allison George for coming up with it:

In the latest NCAA rankings, only seven teams in the country have a pair of players averaging 18.0 points per game or more. Ryan Harrow (19.1) and R.J. Hunter (18.9) are one of those dynamic duos. Harrow has scored 20 or more 10 times this season, while Hunter has done it six times, including in each of the last four games.

The other duos include: Auburn’s K.T. Harrell and Chris Denson, Missouri’s Jordan Clarkson and Jabari Brown, Georgia Southern’s Jelani Hewitt and Tre Bussey (who happens to be Ryan Harrow’s cousin), Louisiana-Lafayette’s Shawn Long and Elfrid Payton, UT-Arlington’s Reger Dowell and Brandon Edwards, and New Mexico’s Cameron Bairstow and Kendall Williams.

How about the fact that nearly half the names on this list are in the Sun Belt Conference. Just shows how good the league really is this season.

Be sure to come back next Thursday for another Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget as the Panthers return home to face Arkansas State at 7 p.m. in the GSU Sports Arena.
