Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget: Arkansas State

Although it is still early in the conference portion of the season, Thursday night’s game between Georgia State and Arkansas State features the first and second place teams in the Sun Belt Conference. Georgia State is returning home looking to extend its seven-game winning streak that has put them at the top of the league standings.

So here is another edition of our Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget. For those just following us (and thank you for joining us), each game during the regular season (and hopefully postseason), I will try to post something that most fans would not know. Some will be more complex than others, but hopefully it will be something that if you are standing around the water cooler the next day would impress your friends.

Since it is the first home game back of the new semester and we are expecting a great turnout from our fans (hint, hint — a home game does not mean to stay at home), here are two nuggets for your enjoyment.

Georgia State has opened conference play 3-0 for the second time in three seasons under head coach Ron Hunter, the last being 2011-12. The Panthers have never opened conference play with a 4-0 mark.

The Panthers went a perfect 22-of-22 from the line at Western Kentucky last Thursday, setting a school-record and E.A. Diddle Arena record for the most makes without a miss. Going back to the South Alabama game, Georgia State has made its last 28 free-throw attempts. The Panthers are shooting 93.9-percent (62-of-66) from the line in Sun Belt play.

Be sure to come back Saturday for another Men’s Basketball Gameday Nugget as the Panthers continue their homestand at 2:30 p.m. facing UALR in the GSU Sports Arena. As a friendly reminder, it is the annual Barefoot for Bare Feet game as head coach Ron Hunter coaches barefoot to raise awareness for Samaritan’s Feet. Be sure to show up for the women’s basketball game at noon as head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener will do the same for the first time.
