Inside Communications: The Planning Never Ends

On the third Monday of every month, a member of the Georgia State communications staff will give InsideGSUSports a look at what is going on in their department. Over the course of every month, each department will be featured at least once. Coming next Monday: Video

Since the last basketball game of the season, on more than one occasion I have been asked about my off-season. It always brings a smile to my face as in the world of college athletics, there really is no off-season. Now, there are times when we do not travel as much or things are not as crazy as others in our office, but as soon as one sport season ends, another begins, or at least the planning part of it.

Just look at football season which ended back in November. As soon as the holiday break was over, final decisions were being made for ticket pricing for the 2014 season and what needed to be put on the website. Just last week, we put together a photo shoot for the 2014 football poster which will be out soon – all of that took weeks of planning. You can visit on a daily basis to see some of the ticket promotions being run to beef up football sales for 2014 (that too didn’t just come together overnight). So just because no games are being played doesn’t mean we are not thinking about what is just around the corner.

In the communications office, as one season ends, the next year begins. With men’s basketball, I am just about done wrapping up bios and all loose ends from an awesome 2013-14 season. As soon as I finish that up in the next week or so, I will start the media guide for 2014-15. Some might ask why start on things so soon and the answer is really simple – you can never get too far ahead in this business. The minute you slow down, you will find yourself in the office until midnight the night before a game.

So we continue to plan. We are already looking at ways to do more videos and social media content for over the summer. Shortly after that we will go into fall season mode and start preparations for all of the fall sports and then before you know it, basketball will be tipping off the season.

Although it sounds kind of crazy, it is mostly fun. Just think, August 27th and the first football game of the season is just around the corner and the off-season for us has not yet begun.
