It was a rather quiet week on the amateur circuit for the Georgia State golf programs. Most of the student-athletes will start to take some time off before reporting back to school in late August. Make sure to check in with the InsideGSUSports Golf Update every week to see how current and former members of the men and women’s golf team are doing.
On the men’s side:
The exciting action for the week came from the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at Reynolds Plantation where J.J. Grey nearly became the first Panther to qualify since 2008. Grey shot 66-73 and led after the first round. He was tied for fourth following the second round with six other golfers and unfortunately lost in a playoff to send him to the tournament in August at Atlanta Athletic Club. He is positioned as the second alternate and has a chance to get in, so we will wait and see.
Also playing on the Great Waters course was Nathan Mallonee, Hayden Poole and Davin White. White finished tied for 20th following rounds of 73-71. Mallonee tied for 25th after shooting 75-70, while Poole, who will be a freshman on the squad this year shot 71-77 to tie for 41st.
Damon Stephenson attempted to qualify for the U.S. Amateur last week at Piedmont Driving Club. He shot a first round 76 which put him out of contention to qualify this year.
White, Grey and Mallonee will be in Chattanooga this weekend for the Choo Choo Invitational beginning Monday. The 54-hole event takes place at Council Fire Golf Club.
On the pro side:
Last week on the European Challenge Tour, Steven Tiley finished tied for 34th at the Swiss Challenge following rounds of 71-70-70-70. He is currently ranked No. 49 on the Challenge Tour Money List.
Jonathan Fricke unfortunately missed the cut on the Web.com Tour out in Boise. The tour moves to Kansas this week.
On the LPGA Tour, Joanna Klatten missed the cut at the Marathon Classic in Ohio following rounds of 74-72.
Remember to check back next week to see how these golfers did and what is on the horizon as the summer continues.
