Inside Academics: We Are Here to Serve The Student-Athlete

On the third Monday of every month, a member of the Academic Support and Student-Athlete Development staff  will give a behind-the-scenes look at what’s going on around its area and the department. Over the course of every month, each department will be featured at least once. Coming Wednesday: PantherVision

Panther Academic Support Services and Student-Athlete Development (We are here to serve the student-athlete and make sure the college experience is a success).

As the Academic Support/Student Athlete Development staff (Brad Horton, Brittany Price, Jessica Summey, Will Judson, Britta Delay) were preparing for the academic year (‘14-‘15), I asked each person to provide 3 bullet points of accomplishments that our student-athletes earned the past academic year (‘13-‘14) that were a representation of success and dedication within academics and student-athlete development. After a discussion with the group the consensus was that are student-athletes performed well in the following aspects: GPA/Graduation, Student-Athlete Development, and Awards/Recognition.

At the conclusion of the Spring ‘14 semester our student-athletes posted an cumulative 3.0 gpa for the twelfth consecutive semester for all sports. Leading the pack was the Women’s Golf Team that earned a cumulative 3.63gpa for the academic year (‘13-‘14).

As we say goodbye to the seniors that represented our athletic department for the previous 4-5 years, our office was proud of the success that was achieved within academics and intercollegiate athletics. We are proud to announce that 91% of our senior student-athletes graduated from Georgia State University.

Student-Athlete Development

Our student-athletes were challenged with a community service outreach program. The student-athletes set a goal of completing 5,000 community service hours amongst all teams. The goal was exceeded as our student-athletes earned 5,800+ community service hours and enjoyed every moment of the commitment.

As our student-athletes performed well in the academic setting a few outstanding awards were earned:

  • AVCA Team Academic Award (Sand Volleyball)
  • USTFCCA All-Academic Team Honors (Women’s Track & Field and Cross Country)
  • WGCA All-Scholar GPA Award – Top 25 program (Women’s Golf)

As the Academic Support/Student-Athlete Development Office embarks on the academic year (‘14-‘15), we are committed to encouraging our student-athletes to meet personal and team goals this upcoming year with a passion for success. Our office has had the opportunity to create partnerships with the Honors College and University Career Services Center at Georgia State University, which will propel our student-athletes to greater achievements. This is an exciting time for Georgia State and I look forward to leading our student-athlete to success within academics and student-athlete development. Our mission for Georgia State Athletics is to “develop champions for today and leaders for tomorrow”, in which our office will provide every resource, service, facility, and staff to help develop our student-athletes entirely in every aspect.

Stay tuned as academic and student-athlete development highlights will continue to be provided throughout this academic year
