Inside Academic Support: Ensuring Success

Each month, a member of the academic support staff will give a behind-the-scenes look at what’s going on around its area and the department. Over the course of every month, each department will be featured at least once.

We are here to serve the student-athlete and make sure the college experience is a success.

As the Academic Support/Student Athlete Development staff — Brittany Price, Jessica Summey, Will Judson, Britta Delay, and myself — headed into the fall term, I asked each individual to encourage their student-athletes to strive for success and break academic records that were earned in previous terms.  Our focus continues to be on helping our student-athletes understand the importance of the following areas during their tenure at Georgia State University: GPA/Graduation, Student-Athlete Development, and Awards/Recognition.

At the conclusion of the Fall 2014 semester, our student-athletes posted a cumulative GPA above 3.0 for the twelfth consecutive semester for all sports. The student-athletes also were acknowledged for earning the highest cumulative GPA in GSU history with a 3.14 for the fall term. Leading the pack was the sand volleyball team that earned a cumulative 3.67 GPA for the academic term.

As we say goodbye to the seniors who represented our athletic department for the previous 4-5 years, our office was proud of the success achieved within academics and intercollegiate athletics. We are proud to announce that 91 percent of our senior student-athletes graduated from Georgia State University.

Student-Athlete Development
Our student-athletes were committed to making a change to stand against sexual violence during the fall semester, as all of our student-athletes completed the university sexual assault awareness training module. The student-athletes also asked for each GSU athletic staff member to complete the sexual assault awareness training module, which has been completed. The focus was to educate young adults on the following areas of sexual violence: awareness, prevention, and policies and procedures for reporting occurrences.

As our student-athletes performed well in the academic setting, a few outstanding awards were earned:

  • College Team Academic Award presented by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (Men’s Soccer)
  • WGCA All-Scholar GPA Award – Top 25 program (Women’s Golf)
